Eye Exams Q & A

What are eye exams?

Eye exams are a comprehensive evaluation that assesses your vision and eye health. Regular eye exams should be part of your routine preventive health care.

Even if you don’t wear glasses, you still need regular eye exams. Many eye diseases develop without causing symptoms. Finding these eye diseases early may help prevent permanent eye damage or vision loss.

If you need an eye exam for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Customized Vision Care can fill out the necessary form.

When do I need an eye exam?

Dr. Kirschen determines when you need an eye exam. Eye and vision exams are generally yearly or bi-yearly, depending on your risk factors. At Customized Vision Care, Dr. Kirschen provides eye exams for patients of all ages and even participates in the InfantSEE® health program, which is a free eye exam for infants up to age 1.

What can I expect during eye exams?

You can expect a thorough evaluation from Dr. Kirschen during your eye exam. He begins by asking detailed questions about any symptoms you may be experiencing, current medications, work environment, and your overall health. He also asks about your family history and your vision and eye health history.

Dr. Kirschen uses the information gathered during your interview to determine treatments and recommendations. He then moves on to testing your vision and assessing your eye health.

Vision testing

Dr. Kirschen tests your vision using an eye chart. The results of your vision test may determine whether you need prescription eyewear.

Eye function testing

Dr. Kirschen also performs a number of eye function tests during your eye exam. He uses these tests to evaluate your depth perception, color vision, eye muscle capability, peripheral vision, and responsiveness to light.

During your eye function testing, Dr. Kirschen also determines whether your eyes are focusing, moving, and working together.

Your eye function tests diagnose underlying conditions that may impair the ability of your eyes to focus or move together.

Eye health

Dr. Kirschen also assesses eye health during your eye exam through visual examination and tonometry, which is an instrument that measures eye pressure. During your eye health exam, he uses special magnifying instruments to evaluate the external and internal structures of your eyes.

After your eye exam, Dr. Kirschen reviews the results with you in detail and provides very specific recommendations to maintain or improve your vision and eye health.
